At MCS-Aware, our mission extends beyond providing information – we actively work behind the scenes to ensure that local authorities, housing teams, and social services fully understand the severe, physical realities of Environmental Illness.
This autumn, we stepped in to provide vital advocacy for a long-standing member facing a critical housing crisis. Displaced from her home due to incompatible internal building materials, she was facing a cold winter living in a highly triggering, damp environment. With a crucial multi-agency council meeting on the horizon, she turned to our team for support.
To ensure the local authority took the situation seriously, we drafted an official advocacy letter directly to her social care team. Rather than treating the situation we presented the council with evidence-based information on how toxic off-gassing from wood composites (like MDF and laminates), improper ventilation, and dampness directly threaten the health of an MCS sufferer.
By reframing the case strictly around the science of Environmental Illness, we provided her social worker with an authoritative tool to request immediate, safe, inert temporary housing on-site.
This highlights exactly why MCS-Aware exists. We bridge the gap between scientific reality and a local authority’s duty of care, ensuring our members are not left isolated in unsafe conditions.
