The Charity for Environmental Illness

here are no statistics for recovery but given the right information and support, many sufferers do make a significant improvement. Some return to full health whilst others are left to cope with residual allergies.

With a suitable approach, patients commonly experience a gradual decrease in symptoms over several years.

There is no medical cure for MCS, but specific symptoms can be alleviated and some people find traditional allergy desensitising treatments helpful. Such treatments include: Neutralization, Desensitisation, Provocation-Neutralization Techniques, or Enzyme Potentiated Desensitisation (EPD). Most of these techniques involve administering small, measured amounts of the allergic substance over a period of time, although because the exact cause of chemical sensitivity is not known, what works for one person may adversely effect another.

Because of their hypersensitivity, many patients react badly to prescribed drugs and frequently turn to complementary therapies in search of a more holistic approach. Doctors practising 'functional' or 'integrative' medicine use a mixture of conventional and complementary treatments to tackle the underlying source of a patient's illness. In the US, such practitioners are called Clinical Ecologists.

Everyone's circumstances are different, but most people benefit from some sort of gentle detoxification and treatment to improve immune function or treat underlying illness. Above all it is important to avoid the offending chemical or environmental allergens to give the body time to recover.

Although everybody's circumstances are different, most sufferers report a high degree of success when addressing the following points:

  • Rule out any diagnosable illness.
  • Detect and avoid food intolerances or true food allergies.
  • Correct nutritional deficiencies and hypoglycaemia.
  • Eradicate any bacterial, viral, parasitic or yeast (candida) infections.
  • Resolve any hyperventilation problems.
  • Reduce the toxic load on the body, improve liver function and elimination efficiency.
  • Improve immune function.
  • Avoid further chemical exposure.
