This study concluded that individuals with self-reported chemical-related sensitivity were more frequent carriers of genetic variants of GSTM1, GSTT1 and NAT2. The authors believe that the results reflect the gene-environment associations of increased chemical-related sensitivity in individuals suffering from diseases like MCS, IEI or CFS but have to be reproduced in further studies to prove the observations.

In this review the findings of a two-phase study of the prevalence, symptomatology(set of symptoms), and etiology(cause) of multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) are summarised. The possible triggers are explored, the potential linkage between MCS and other disorders, and the lifestyle alterations produced by MCS
The findings suggest that MCS has a physiological and not a psychological cause

Objective:Blood of 148 healthy controls were compared with 150 MCS un-exposed individuals to compare plasma levels of cytokines( these are cell signalling proteins that are especially important in the immune system when fighting infections).
Conclusion: MCS individuals have an increase in certain cytokines compared to healthy individuals. These cytokines can pick up foreign bodies and are key in helping fight infection.

This study investigates the frequencies of positive test reactions to 26 fragrance substances for which labelling is mandatory in the EU.
The findings confirm that the standard fragrance markers fail to identify patients with contact allergies to the 26 fragrances.

MCS patients apparently process odors differently from controls. This may be due to activation in the prefrontal cortex(PFC) of the brain.
These changes were studied by infrared imagery looking at cerebral blood flow, using an odor stimulation test. 12 MCS patients vs 11 controls. There were significant changes in activity in the left and right sides of the PFC compared to changes in the central region in the controls.
Despite the small sample size, these results suggest that prefrontal information processing in the brain associated with odor processing plays a significant role in this disorder. In other words the odor processing region of the brain is slightly different in MCS patients compared to controls.

Common laundry products, used in washing and drying machines, can contribute to outdoor emissions through dryer vents. The types and amounts of chemicals emitted are largely unknown. This study looked at the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) both fragranced laundry products and in the air emitted from dryer vents during use of these products.

This study investigated the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) emitted from 25 common fragranced consumer products—laundry products, personal care products, cleaning supplies, and air fresheners in the US. Relatively little is known about the composition of these products, due to lack of prior study, complexity of formulations, and limitations and protections on ingredient disclosure in the U.S.

The purpose of this study was to look at genetic susceptibility factors for MCS. Ninety six MCS patients and 1,207 controls from a general population divided into four severity groups of chemical sensitivity were genotyped for variants in certain genes.
The results suggest that variants in the genes examined are of less importance to MCS than previously reported.
